What North Carolina's exam covers
The Office of EMS publishes a blueprint, read October 9, 2026, with a range of questions per domain: operations 6 to 12, airway, respiration and ventilation 11 to 22, cardiovascular emergencies 11 to 23, medical emergencies 10 to 20, traumatic emergencies 8 to 18 and special patient populations 4 to 10. Forty-two questions here follow those shares.
North Carolina's own rules
Twenty-two more, outside the blueprint's six domains, cover what only this state sets: the 90-day deadline, three attempts in six months, the four-year credential, reinstatement and ambulance rules of 10A NCAC 13P. The topic filter keeps them apart.
Where the clinical answers come from
The state says its questions are not taken from protocols. The clinical answers here cite the public National Model EMS Clinical Guidelines so that each can be checked.
- Exam mode asks 50 questions in 60 minutes, the pace of the real 100 in two hours.
- The state reports percent correct by domain. Its own worked example says to study every area, not only those under 70%.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the NC EMT state exam?
100 multiple-choice questions in two hours, by the NC OEMS Candidate Handbook of November 14, 2023. The exam is linear: every candidate at a level gets the same number of questions in each domain.
What is the passing score for the NC EMT exam?
No fixed percent is published. The Office of EMS sets a pass point for each exam form from expert ratings of its questions, so an easier form needs more right answers. Results show pass or fail with percent correct by domain.
How many times can you take the NC EMT state exam?
Three attempts within six months, with the written examination completed within 90 days of your course graded date, under 10A NCAC 13P .0502. After three failures the course itself must be repeated.
Is the NC EMT exam the same as the NREMT?
No. North Carolina gives its own written exam with its own six-domain blueprint. Under rule .0502(b), someone who took the initial course at a North Carolina approved institution takes the state exam even when applying through legal recognition.
Are these the real NC EMT exam questions?
No. They are our own. Rule .1507 lets the state deny or revoke a credential for copying or reconstructing its exam questions, and none is used here. The sample questions on the state's site were not reworded either.
