What the P1 test covers
ASE's Parts Specialist study guide gives vehicle systems 47 of the 70 scored questions: engines 11, brakes 9, drive train 8, electrical 7, suspension and steering 7, cab heating and air conditioning 5. Sales skills take 9, communication skills 7 and inventory management 7.
Where the answers come from
Brake, lamp, wheel, refrigerant and warranty answers rest on federal rules. Counter duties come from the Department of Labor's O*NET profile of parts salespersons, and part and stock terms from Wikipedia.
A timed round
The real test allows 90 minutes. The timed round asks 70 questions, the scored count, against that clock. This ASE parts specialist P1 practice test also prints on paper.
- Vehicle systems are two thirds of P1, so learn what each part does before the counter and stock questions.
- A parts question often turns on one identifier: a chamber type, a wire gauge, a VIN character, a battery group size.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the ASE P1 test?
Eighty, in 90 minutes, by ASE's 2026 Parts Specialist study guide. Ten are research questions that are not counted, which leaves 70 scored. Recertification is 36 questions in 45 minutes.
Does ASE publish P1 sample questions?
Yes. ASE's free Parts Specialist Study Guide prints sample P1 questions with the test specifications and task list. This page is separate: its questions were written for this site from that outline and public sources, and none is one of ASE's.
What does ASE ask of a parts specialist besides the test?
ASE's page says parts specialists must pass a Parts series test and show two years of work experience related to parts counter work, not hands-on repair. They retest every five years to keep the certification.
What is the difference between ASE P1 and P2?
P1 covers medium and heavy truck parts in a wholesale, retail or fleet setting. P2, Automobile Parts Specialist, is for retail or jobber car parts stores and has 75 scored questions. Both allow 90 minutes.
