Three domains and their weights

NCRA's RPR Job Analysis weights the Written Knowledge Test as Technology and Innovation 43 percent, Industry Practices 34, and NCRA, Professionalism, and Ethics 23. This bank holds 22, 17 and 11 questions.

What a court reporter practice test can check

The Job Analysis lists reference books for grammar and for medical and legal terms that are not public. Each fact here was read in a public text named under the answer: federal rules and statutes, the GPO Style Manual, MedlinePlus, Wex and NCRA's own pages.

A timed run

The timed test asks all 50 in 46 minutes, the real test's pace of 110 minutes for 120 questions.

  • The Job Analysis says technology questions on computer knowledge are based on Windows operating systems.
  • The written test is one part of the RPR. The other three are five-minute Skills Tests at 180, 200 and 225 words per minute.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the RPR Written Knowledge Test?

120 multiple-choice questions in 110 minutes. Only 100 count toward the score. The other 20 are new questions being tried out, and candidates are not told which they are.

What score do you need to pass the RPR exam?

A scaled score of 70 or better on the Written Knowledge Test, and 95 percent accuracy on each of the three Skills Tests. NCRA scales scores to keep difficulty consistent from one test to the next.

Is there an official RPR study guide?

Yes. NCRA sells an RPR Study Guide in its online store, with a review of each domain and sample questions. These questions are ours, written from the public Job Analysis, and none comes from that NCRA RPR study guide.

What should a study guide for court reporters cover?

For the RPR Written Knowledge Test, the Job Analysis is the list: computers, CAT software, realtime, file handling and security; punctuation, vocabulary, medical and legal terms, reporter duties and court rules; NCRA's certifications and ethics code. A state court reporter exam follows its state's outline.
