Ten competencies, nearly even
Eight carry about 10% of the questions each: counseling; programs and interventions for current issues in schools; assessment; career development and postsecondary opportunities; consultation, collaboration and coordination; professional, ethical and legal considerations; student appraisal and advisement; and cultural competence. Developing and assessing school counseling programs carries 12%, technology and digital citizenship 8%.
Timing
The real test allows 2 hours 30 minutes of testing time. Exam mode gives 90 minutes for 48 of the 50 questions here, the same time per question.
What the questions rest on
Twenty-three rest on the American School Counselor Association's ethical standards, position statements and National Model, which the competencies name. Nine rest on the 2026 Florida Statutes, from bullying and abuse reporting to diploma credits and dual enrollment.
The competencies use fourth-edition ASCA National Model terms: the annual administrative conference, Mindsets and Behaviors data and outcome data. The fifth edition renamed all three.
Competency 6 names FERPA, HIPAA, IDEA and Section 504, and legislation on students who are undocumented or homeless.
Questions and answers
Is there an FTCE guidance counseling study guide?
The FTCE site lists test 018 as School Counseling PK–12 and has no test titled Guidance and Counseling. Its free test information guide for 018 is the state's own study guide, and the questions on this page follow that guide's ten competencies.
How many questions are on the FTCE School Counseling PK-12 test?
Approximately 80 multiple-choice questions on a computer, with no reference materials provided. Some may be questions under evaluation for future tests, and the FTCE site says those do not affect a score.
What is the passing score for FTCE School Counseling?
The FTCE site gives it as a scaled score of at least 200. That is not 200 questions and not a percent, so a count of right answers here has no pass line and exam mode shows none.
