Two domains, 40 and 60

Foundations of Gifted Education is about 40% of the exam: the history and law of gifted education and the traits and needs of gifted students. Assessment, Curriculum and Instruction is about 60%: identification, program design and classroom practice. Five competencies sit under the two.

80 questions on the real exam

The Supplemental exam asks 80 selected-response questions and allows 4 hours 45 minutes of testing time for them. Exam mode gives 160 minutes for the 45 here.

Read against today's State Plan

State questions follow the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students as revised in July 2026, Education Code Chapter 29 and 19 TAC Chapter 89. Terms such as asynchrony follow the National Association for Gifted Children's glossary.

  • The State Plan has an Accountability column and an Exemplary column. Questions here use Accountability, which reflects state law or rule.

Questions and answers

Is there a TExES Gifted and Talented Supplemental study guide?

The free one is the preparation manual on the exam program's site; Section 3 holds the framework. For the law questions, read the Texas State Plan itself. Its glossary defines terms the framework names, such as array and continuum of learning experiences.

What does the TExES 162 GT test cover?

Five competencies: the foundations of gifted education, the characteristics and needs of gifted students, assessment and identification, program and curriculum design, and instruction. Texas law and the State Plan run through all five.

What is the passing score on TExES 162?

240, according to the exam's page on the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program site. That figure is scaled, so a count of right answers on a practice page cannot be turned into it.

Are these practice tests for TExES 162 made of real exam questions?

No. Every question was written for this site from a competency and the public source named beside it. The real exam and the manual's sample questions were not copied or reworded.
