What the Delaware test is
Board rule 4.1 requires an approved training program, certified by a mandatory test with a passing grade of 75%. Rule 4.1.1 lists nine training subjects. These questions cover the four that public law answers: rules and regulations, legal requirements and limitations, use of force and asset protection.
What a guard may not do
11 Del. C. § 1914 prohibits arrest or detention by a private person unless a statute allows it. Two exceptions matter on post: a merchant's employee may hold a suspected shoplifter, and security at a health-care institution may hold a person who presents a safety risk, each only to summon a law-enforcement officer.
- Keep your identification card on you on post (24 Del. C. § 1325) and report any arrest to the Board within 5 days (§ 1310).
- A chokehold counts as deadly force under 11 Del. C. § 471.
- A patch that says "officer" or "patrol" needs the word "security" in front (Board rule 10.2).
Questions and answers
What score do I need on the Delaware security guard test?
75%, the passing grade in Board rule 4.1. The rule gives no question count and no time limit, so the 25 questions of the practice exam here are this page's own choice.
Where do I take the Delaware security guard test?
The Delaware State Police security guard page, read October 12, 2026, says the test is given only at Delaware Technical Community College campuses: Stanton, Dover and Georgetown. Training may be taken elsewhere.
How long is a Delaware security guard license good for?
Five years. Under 24 Del. C. § 1326(e) the identification card expires on the fifth anniversary of your date of birth after it is issued. Renewal needs the training and test certifications again.
Can a security guard detain someone in Delaware?
Only where a statute says so, such as the shoplifting detention in 11 Del. C. § 840(c): probable cause, a reasonable manner, on the premises, for a reasonable time. This is exam practice, not legal advice.
Are these the real Delaware security guard test questions?
No. Each was written for this page from the Delaware Code or the Board's rules. The approved training also teaches ethics, emergency services, diversity, communication and terrorism, which no public law answers and this page does not ask.
