How this list was compiled: Our own questions, written to Unit 8 (Applications of Integration; topics 8.1 to 8.13) of the College Board's AP Calculus AB and BC Course and Exam Description, https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/media/pdf/ap-calculus-ab-and-bc-course-and-exam-description.pdf, read 2026-10-14. Every answer is mathematics worked from what the question prints, and the computed ones were worked out a second time with computer algebra on 2026-10-14. The rule behind each answer was read on 2026-10-14 in the essential knowledge statement of the course description or the Wikipedia article named under the question. Licence: Own work.

What Unit 8 covers

The College Board's course description for AP Calculus AB and BC, read October 14, 2026, gives Unit 8 thirteen topics. The sets here follow them: average value (7 questions), position, velocity and acceleration (8), accumulation and net change (7), area between curves (14 over topics 8.4 to 8.6), volumes with known cross sections (8), the disc method (8), the washer method (7) and arc length (5), which is BC only. The description gives topics no weights, so the spread is ours.

Worked answers

Every answer is worked from the curves, rates or velocities that the question prints, and each computed one was worked out a second time with computer algebra. Where one wrong choice is the usual slip, the explanation says which.

  • Average value divides the integral by b − a. Average rate of change divides f(b) − f(a) by b − a.
  • For total distance, find where the velocity changes sign and add the pieces as positive numbers.
  • In the washer method, square each radius first and then subtract. Squaring the difference is the usual slip.

Questions and answers

What is Unit 8 in AP Calculus?

Applications of Integration. Its thirteen topics run from the average value of a function (8.1) through motion, accumulation, area between curves and volumes to arc length (8.13).

How much of the AP Calculus exam is Unit 8?

From 10 to 15% of the multiple-choice section on the AB exam and from 5 to 10% on the BC exam, by the College Board's course pages.

Is Unit 8 the same in AP Calculus AB and BC?

Topics 8.1 to 8.12 belong to both courses. Topic 8.13, arc length and distance traveled, is BC only. The course description suggests 19 to 20 class periods for the unit in AB and 13 to 14 in BC.

Is this the AP Calculus Unit 8 progress check?

No. The College Board's Progress Check for Unit 8, about 30 multiple-choice and 3 free-response questions by the course description, is assigned by teachers in AP Classroom. The questions here were written for this page.
