What the Alabama test covers
Board rule 832-X-1-.08 has each certified trainer test in writing on the subjects taught, chosen from the Board's list of approved subjects. These questions follow the legal subjects on that list: Chapter 27C, the Board's rules, Alabama criminal law, detention and arrest, and use of force.
Who needs the license
A security officer employed under contract applies within 30 days of initial employment and carries the card on duty (§ 34-27C-7). An employee who guards only the employer's own business is exempt (§ 34-27C-17), and so is a sworn peace officer.
- Report any conviction other than a traffic violation to the Board within seven business days (rule 832-X-1-.02(7)).
- Your badge must say "security officer" or a similar term, and may not show the Great Seal of Alabama (§ 34-27C-12).
- No handcuffs or chemical spray on duty without training and certification for that item (rule 832-X-1-.08(6)).
Questions and answers
What score do I need on the Alabama security guard test?
70%. Board rule 832-X-1-.08(3) grades each written test pass or fail with a minimum of seventy percent. The rule sets no question count, so the 25 questions of the practice exam here are this page's own choice.
How many hours of training does an Alabama security guard need?
At least eight hours of Board-approved classroom training with a certified trainer before applying, under Ala. Code § 34-27C-8(a) and Board rule 832-X-1-.08(1). Refresher training comes before each renewal.
How long is an Alabama security guard license good for?
Two years. Under Ala. Code § 34-27C-4(g)(2) a security officer's license expires two years from the date of issuance, and § 34-27C-7(b) asks for the renewal form, fee and proof of refresher training 30 days before.
Can a security guard detain someone in Alabama?
A merchant's employee with probable cause may detain a person over goods held for sale, in a reasonable manner for a reasonable time (Ala. Code § 15-10-14). A private person may arrest under § 15-10-7. This is exam practice, not legal advice.
Are these the real Alabama security guard test questions?
No. Each was written for this page from the Code of Alabama and the Board's rules. Certified trainers write their own tests, and the training also covers patrol, reports, fire control and crowd control, which this page does not ask.
