How this list was compiled: Our own questions, written to the three reading-and-grammar tests described in College Board's ACCUPLACER English as a Second Language (ESL) Tests, 2021 (https://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/accuplacer/pdf/esl-test-descriptions.pdf, read 2026-10-12): ESL Reading Skills, ESL Sentence Meaning and ESL Language Use, each a 20-question test. The bank holds 24 questions for each, spread over the question types and content areas in that document's tables. Grammar rules were checked at the Purdue Online Writing Lab (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/grammar/index.html) and word meanings at Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), both read 2026-10-12; a reading answer is checked against the text printed with its question. Licence: Questions, passages, sentences, choices and explanations are original work of this site. The people and places in the passages are made up for practice.

How it works

This free LOEP practice test has 72 questions of our own, 24 for each of three Accuplacer ESL tests: Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning and Language Use. It is unofficial and not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by College Board.

Read the full guide

What the three tests ask

In College Board's ESL test descriptions, read October 12, 2026, Reading Skills uses passages of 90 words or fewer, with about half the questions on stated facts and the rest on inference. Sentence Meaning fills a blank or asks what a sentence means. Language Use fills a blank or combines two sentences.

What is not here

The ESL Listening test plays conversations and lectures, and WritePlacer ESL is an essay. This page has no sound and marks no writing, so neither is practiced here.

  • In a sentence-combining question, check that the new sentence keeps the meaning of both originals. A well-formed sentence can still reverse cause and result.
  • For a main-idea question, set aside choices that are true details from the passage. The main idea covers them all.

Questions and answers

What is the LOEP test?

LOEP stands for Levels of English Proficiency. Colleges such as Connecticut State Community College, which lists an ESOL/LOEP exam, and Edmonds College use the name for the Accuplacer ESL tests. College Board's own pages call them the ACCUPLACER ESL tests.

Is this LOEP test practice free?

Yes. All 72 questions, their explanations, exam mode and the printed question sheet are free, with no sign-up.

How many questions are on the Accuplacer ESL test?

20 on each multiple-choice test, College Board's test descriptions say. Its test page adds that there is no time limit and that each answer decides how hard the next question is. Exam mode here asks a fixed 20 with no clock.

How is the Accuplacer ESL placement test scored?

College Board gives each of the four multiple-choice ESL tests a score range of 20 to 120 and says no one passes or fails. Each college sets the scores that place students into its own courses, so ask your testing office.

Are these ESL Accuplacer sample questions from College Board?

No. This Accuplacer ESL practice test is our own: every passage, sentence and question was written for this site from College Board's description of each test. College Board gives its own free sample questions on its Accuplacer practice page.
