What Unit 4 covers

The College Board's course description, effective fall 2026 and read October 14, 2026, gives Unit 4 nine topics, and the bank follows them in order: plate tectonics (8 questions), soil formation and erosion (6), soil composition and properties (7), Earth's atmosphere (8), global wind patterns (6), watersheds (4), solar radiation and seasons (5), geography and climate (3), and El Niño and La Niña (6). Topics carry no weights in the description, so the spread is ours.

Sources you can open

Each answer cites an essential knowledge statement of the course description, a page of the U.S. Geological Survey or NOAA, or a Wikipedia article.

  • Match each boundary to its landforms: convergent builds mountains and island arcs, divergent spreads seafloor, transform makes earthquakes.
  • On a soil texture triangle the three percentages add to 100, so two of them give you the third.
  • High pressure near 30 degrees means dry weather; low pressure at the equator and at 50 to 60 degrees means rain.

Questions and answers

What is Unit 4 in APES?

Earth Systems and Resources. Its nine topics run from plate tectonics and soil to the atmosphere, wind, watersheds, seasons, climate and El Niño. It carries 10 to 15% of the multiple-choice section, by the course description.

What should an AP Environmental Science Unit 4 study guide cover?

For Earth Systems and Resources: the three kinds of plate boundary, how soil forms and erodes, the soil texture triangle, the gases and layers of the atmosphere, the three circulation cells, watershed features, why seasons happen, rain shadows, and El Niño and La Niña.

Is there math in APES Unit 4?

Hardly any. The description lists no math skill for the unit; its skills center on maps, diagrams and soil investigations. The one calculation here finds a missing percentage on a soil texture triangle.

How long is Unit 4 of AP Environmental Science?

About 11 to 12 class periods, by the course description. Its Progress Check, which teachers assign in AP Classroom, has about 25 multiple-choice questions and one free-response question on designing an investigation.

Are these the College Board's Unit 4 questions?

No. These 53 are ours, written from the published topic list of Unit 4 and the public pages named under them. The College Board's own questions stay in AP Classroom and on its exams.
