Subtest III extended-response practice

Name ____ Date ____

Pick one prompt and write a full essay on your own paper or screen; the lines are for a plan. Unofficial practice prompts; none is from the real test.

Literary text

  • Prompt 1. "That time of year thou mayst in me behold / When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang / Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, / Bare ruin'd choirs, where late the sweet birds sang." William Shakespeare, Sonnet 73 (1609) Identify a theme of these lines and explain how the poet's images and word choice develop it. Support each point with words from the text.
  • Prompt 2. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity." Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities (1859) Explain what the structure of this opening sentence tells a reader about the age the novel describes, and how its repetition shapes the tone.

Nonliterary text

  • Prompt 3. "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here." Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address (November 19, 1863) State the speaker's purpose in this sentence and analyze how its contrast between saying and doing advances that purpose for his audience.
  • Prompt 4. "You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man." Frederick Douglass, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) Explain the claim the writer makes about himself here, and how the reversed wording of the two halves gives the claim its force.

How written answers are scored 6 lines, made to print

What scorers look for in a written answer

The program names these performance characteristics for constructed-response answers. The wording of each line is ours. Unofficial; not a scoring guide of the real test.

Performance characteristics

  • Purpose Does the answer do what the assignment asks, in the terms of the subject matter being tested?
  • Subject matter knowledge Is the knowledge of the subject accurate, and is it applied to the question and not only recited?
  • Support Is each point backed by fitting evidence of good quality: a quotation, an example, a fact, a step of reasoning?
  • Depth and breadth of understanding Named for some assignments only: how fully the answer shows an understanding of the subject.

How the scoring is done

  • Each written answer is scored by at least two California educators.
  • A subtest's passing score is a scaled score of 220 on a scale of 100 to 300.

Source: The performance characteristics are named in the program's Test Results Report Information (https://www.ctcexams.nesinc.com/content/docs/CS_ScoreReport_Insert.pdf), read 2026-10-09. The real Subtest III is scored on written answers alone. Checked October 9, 2026.

Where the answers come from

Each question names its source: the Purdue Online Writing Lab, the Academy of American Poets, the National Archives, the National Park Service or the Avalon Project. Quoted lines were checked in Project Gutenberg.
